Kerry board to meet with O'Connor

Kerry GAA officials are expected to meet with Jack O'Connor in the next two days in a bid to convince him to stay on as the county's senior football manager.

It is understood that O'Connor indicated to his backroom team, following last Sunday's All-Ireland SFC quarter-final defeat to Donegal, that he is to step down from the position.

The Dromid man still has a year to run on a three-year managerial term and it looks like he will be asked to see it out, as there is no obvious replacement currently and selector Eamonn Fitzmaurice, a
former Kerry Under-21 boss, does not feel ready yet for the senior role.

A source told the Irish Examiner: "Having Fitzmaurice in charge with the likes of Seamus Moynihan and Dara Ó Cinnéide would be a very exciting combination, but it is a couple of years too early for that."

The possibility of Kerry legend Mick O'Dwyer returning to the fold has been mentioned locally, as part of a tandem with physical trainer Donie Buckley.

O'Connor had led the Kingdom for the past four years, having previously been in charge between 2004 and 2006. He was at the helm for their All-Ireland successes in 2004, 2006 and 2009.

But the 2012 season was a relatively poor one for Kerry given their pedigree and footballing ability.

The current panel seem to be at a crossroads, with some of the senior players - including Tomás O Sé, Eoin Brosnan and Aidan O’Mahony - being linked with retirement from the inter-county scene.Home
