Chelsea centre-back Ricardo Carvalho was left on the bench for the Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge.
The Portugal international was criticised for errors following the Barclays Premier League defeat to Aston Villa at the weekend and was replaced by Branislav Ivanovic, while Juliano Belletti replaced Jose Bosingwa.
Didier Drogba served the final game of his European ban, so Salomon Kalou started instead and Michael Ballack returned from injury to replace Florent Malouda.
