The Green Party today urged all political parties in Ireland to commit to reducing the country's carbon emissions by 3% annually over the next 10 years as part of a strategy to tackle climate change.
Speaking the day before top UN scientists release a report on the impacts of climate change across the world, Green Party leader Trevor Sargent said: "The time for gestures, for greenwash and for party politicking on climate change is over.
"The IPCC will report tomorrow that every year from now on two to seven million people - predominantly poor people living near major river deltas -will find themselves trapped between rising sea levels and increasingly frequent floods.
"In just 70 years time it is likely that at least an extra billion people worldwide will experience water scarcity and several hundred million will be threatened by hunger. There is a national and global climate emergency and we need a position of consensus from all of the parties within the Irish political system to effectively respond."
