HSE rolls out paramedic service in west Cork
The HSE has started the rollout of a new advanced paramedic service in west Cork.
The move could ultimately lead to a reduction in hours at the region's only Accident and Emergency (A&E) unit.
It is hoped that the new staff will provide a better outcome for seriously ill patients, who instead of being treated in Bantry will be transferred to Cork.
If the changes are implemented, it would leave some residents in the region up to two and a half hours drive from the nearest accident and emergency unit.
Brendan Hayes - who works at Bantry hospital - welcomes the new paramedics, but says he is opposed to any changes to the current 24-hour service.
"We don't see them as an alternative to a fully functioning A&E - and I feel that we are united in our concern," he said.
"Because of our unique geographical location, somebody may die as a result of not having a fully functioning A&E 24 hours a day in Bantry."
