The HSE has said it will be working to keep schools open as primary and secondary students return today in the midst of the swine flu pandemic.

It says it is satisfied with assurances from the Department of Education that teachers are well prepared to deal with the situation.

The HSE said it does not envisage closing a school unless there are a significant number of swine flu cases or serious public health concerns.

In that event the HSE said it would suspend school for one week.

Two people have died here from the virus.
