The election of a Mayor of Dublin has moved a step closer after the Cabinet formally approved the "heads of the legislation" to create the post today.
The Environment Minister John Gormley has already admitted he is now unlikely to meet his initial deadline of an election in June.
But the Taoiseach Brian Cowen has told the Dáil the Government will live up to its promise to create the job, which will cover all four Dublin local authorities, this year.
