Gilmore: Govt 'united' on Kenny's comments about Vatican

The Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore is standing by comments made by the Taoiseach that the Vatican obstructed the inquiry into child abuse in the Diocese of Cloyne.

It follows calls at the weekend from the Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin calling for clarity on the statement by the Taoiseach in the Dáil in the wake of the publication of the report.

Speaking in County Carlow at the Labour Party's think-in, the Tánaiste said the Government is "united" on this issue.

The Government is expected to discuss the Vatican's response to the Cloyne Report at its Cabinet meeting later this week.

In a lengthy statement at the weekend, the Holy See rejected it interfered with child protection guidelines and also described accusations by the Taoiseach as unfounded.
