Gardaí are continuing to question a man in his 40s after a Monet painting was damaged at the National Gallery in Dublin yesterday.

Gardaí are continuing to question a man in his 40s after a Monet painting was damaged at the National Gallery in Dublin yesterday.

The Monet piece 'Argenteuil Basin with a single Sailboat', which dates back to 1874, was damaged shortly before midday.

The man was taken into custody yesterday afternoon and is now being held for questioning at Pearse Street garda station.

The painting was hanging in room 10 in the lower base wing of the gallery at the time. Investigating officers are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
