Fisherman critical after fall off Clare

A Polish fisherman is in a critical condition after being rescued from the sea off County Clare.

The man was fishing at Ballyrean north of Doolin at around 9.45am.

It is understood that he either fell from or was washed off the rocks in to the sea 30 feet below.

The Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard was at the scene within minutes as they were involved in a training exercise nearby.

The Shannon-based Coast Guard rescue helicopter located the man at around 10.30am.

He was airlifted to hospital in Galway and is said to be in a critical condition this afternoon having been in the water for up to 50 minutes.
