Derry murder victim named

The 37-year-old man who was shot dead in the Waterside area of Derry last night has been named locally as Christopher 'Cricky' O'Kane, a notorious drug dealer.

Mr O'Kane died in hospital after he was shot in the stomach four times by a gang of three or four men at his home in Milldale Crescent in the mainly nationalist Currynieran Estate.

Sources in the estate said he was a known drug dealer who had spent time in prison for drugs offences.

The RUC is keeping an open mind about the killing, but detectives are investigating the possibility that republican paramilitaries may have been responsible.

The Provisional IRA have killed a number of drug dealers in the past under the cover name Direct Action Against Drugs.

Local SDLP Assembly member Annie Courtney said today that Mr O'Kane had long been the scourge of the nationalist community in Cullynieran.
