Clare County Council has announced that swimming is now prohibited at Lahinch, Kilkee and Spanish Point beaches due to "abnormal weather conditions" and the possibility of pollution.

Public bathing notices and red flags indicating that swimming is prohibited have been placed on all of the affected beaches.

The results of routine tests on water samples at the three beaches have shown up traces of e-coli. Further test results are due on Sunday.

Swimming will not be resumed at the beaches until results return within bathing water quality limits.
