Dairy show champion only eight miles from Dublin’s O’Connell Street

Big attendance defied storms Ophelia and Brian to visit last Saturday’s National Dairy Show at Millstreet, Co Cork

The family famous in dairy breeding for being only eight miles from Dublin’s O’Connell Street won their fourth Irish Examiner National Dairy Show championship last Saturday.

The father and son team of Cyril and John Dowling of Baldonnel, Co Dublin, took the prize, but their winner, Clonpaddin G Fame ET, could be said to be the product of four of Ireland’s top cow breeding farms.

Cow watchers will know from her Fame family name and the dam’s name, Cradenhill Linjet Fame, that she is a grand-daughter of Moralta Inspiration Fame, the super-cow which won this championship three times in the 1990s for the Cradenhill herd of George and Peter Kingston, Nohoval, Co Cork.

Clonpaddin G Fame ET was born in the Clonpaddin herd of Gary and John Hurley, Arklow, and purchased there as a calf by Mervyn Eager of Newcastle, Co Dublin. Mr Eager sold her on as a three-year-old to the Dowlings.

The six-year-old is a 12-gallon cow, with an official 305-day production record of 12976kg at 4.26% fat and 3.16% protein. The Dowlings were previously Irish Examiner championship winners in 1998, 2008, and 2015.

Many in the Show’s big attendance (despite the extra workload as farmers tried to recover from the devastation by storms Ophelia and Brian) had the chance to meet Agriculture Minister Michael Creed, and the special guest who opened the show, retired Leinster and Ireland rugby player Mike Ross, whose family from Ballyhooly, Co Cork, are well known in pedigree breeding.

Meanwhile in the show ring, there was a feel of a Munster-Leinster rugby derby match, with Leinster dominating the final line-up before Canadian show judge Brian Carscadden picked the Irish Examiner National Dairy Show champion.

He went for the Co Dublin cow from the Baldonnel Holsteins, and it was Connacht that claimed the reserve championship, with GS Alliance Atwood Okisha owned by Aidan Foody and Rory Timlin, Co Mayo, with Leinster also taking the overall third place of Honourable Mention, with Kilwarden Windbrook Vix ET, owned by Brochan Cocoman, Co Kildare.

Munster was out of the top three; however, the cow family ties back to the Kingstons’ Moralta, a Canadian import with a an Ex 97 rating yet unmatched in the Republic of Ireland, was a strong Cork connection.

And Limerick played a part also, represented by cow “fitter” Tadhg Burke, who had the champ looking impressive last Saturday.

Earlier, Munster exhibitors had done well, with Rickey and John Barrett winning the Premier Breeder Award for their wins, among them the Intermediate Holstein Championship and Overall Jersey and Exhibitor Bred Championships.

The Confined Champion was exhibited by Thomas Storan, Co Limerick.
