Ex-Corry star Jones vows to quit booze

Bruce Jones has vowed to give up drinking.

Bruce Jones has vowed to give up drinking.

The former 'Coronation Street' actor yesterday pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and drink driving - in which he tried to kill himself and wife Sandra as she was driving their car at 70mph - and now wants to clean up his act.

His lawyer Dominic D'Souza said: "He accepts for the first time he has a drink problem that needs to be addressed. It has caused him significant problems. He wants to get his life together."

The 57-year-old star - who portrayed foul-mouthed Les Battersby in the ITV1 soap - was upset he made his wife of 26 years take to the stand in the trial at Mold Crown Court and describe her horror of the drive as he threatened to take both their lives.

The lawyer added: "There are no circumstances in which he would wish her to go through that again."

The incident happened as Sandra picked up her husband from a pub in Cheshire and was taking him in their Mercedes to Abersoch, Gwynedd, North West Wales.

Bruce is set to be sentenced next month for dangerous driving and drink driving, while a charge of assaulting his wife minutes after her ordeal will remain on file.

The judge has ruled out jail but said he had committed "a serious offence and the defendant was heavily under the influence of alcohol".

The actor has been bailed to an unknown address and must remain indoors at night, unless he is appearing on the stage for charity.
