Mugabe's aide shrugs off poll criticism

A spokesman for Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe today dismissed Western criticism of its widely disputed elections.

George Charamba said at the African Union summit in Egypt that the United States, Britain and other European countries can “go hang” because they have no basis to condemn Mugabe.

Mugabe is under intense international criticism for winning a run-off ballot in which he was the sole candidate.

Many Western countries have called the vote a sham, and the US is pushing for additional sanctions and an arms embargo against Zimbabwe.

But African leaders have been hesitant to publicly criticise Mugabe. Instead, some are gently urging him to accept a power-sharing agreement
