Nato soldier dies in Afghanistan ambush
23/07/2008 - 08:09:56

A Nato soldier has died following an ambush by militants in southern Afghanistan, while US-led coalition troops killed several militants near the capital.

Nato did not release the nationality of the dead soldier. Most of the troops in Kajaki are British.

A statement from the alliance said the militants fired on a Nato patrol in Kajaki district of Helmand province yesterday. It said the soldier was initially wounded and later died.

More than 2,600 people have died in insurgency-related violence this year in Afghanistan, according to an Associated Press tally of official figures.

Monthly death tolls of US and Nato troops in Afghanistan surpassed US military deaths in Iraq in May and June.
