Obama talks with US troops in Afghanistan

Military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Dave Johnson says Mr Obama went to an American base in the Afghan capital to dine with soldiers and sailors there.

The Democratic presidential candidate is part of a congressional delegation expected to meet later today with President Hamid Karzai.

Mr Obama has made refocusing US attention on terrorist threats in Afghanistan and neighbouring Pakistan a centrepiece of his campaign for the November presidential election.

He opposed the Iraq war and has proposed sending about 7,000 more troops to Afghanistan.

Mr Obama has also criticised the effectiveness of Karzai and his Western-backed government.
