Chinese Ambassador angered by Gormley comments
13/04/2008 - 10:03:48

ChinaChina's Ambassador to Ireland has accused the Green Party of unacceptable behaviour, following comments John Gormley made at the Green's national conference last night.

Ambassador Liu Biwei stormed out of the conference after the Green Party leader criticised the abuse of human rights by China in Tibet.

Towards the end of a speech, that mainly focused on climate change, Mr Gormley said respect for human rights must extend to all countries and one country that has been exploited and suppressed and suffered for far too long is Tibet.

As he spoke, the Chinese Ambassador Liu Beiwei walked out of the auditorium amid the cheers and applause of Green Party members for their leader's stance.

Afterwards Ambassador Liu said Minister Gormley was ignorant of the real facts of what is happening in Tibet.
