Baghdad suicide bombers kill 17
02/10/2008 - 10:49:12

Suicide bombers killed 17 worshippers as they left morning prayers at two Baghdad mosques today.

In a separate attack, gunmen shot dead six people as they were travelling in a minibus in Wajihiyah, a town 60 miles from the capital.

The victims included two children and three women.

The bombings in Baghdad occurred as Shiite worshippers were celebrating the holiday of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.

No group claimed responsibility, but attacks on Shiite civilians are widely associated with Sunni extremists like al-Qaida hoping to reignite the sectarian conflict that pushed the nation to the brink of civil war two years ago.

In the deadliest attack, a suicide car bomber detonated his explosives about 20 yards from a mosque in Zafaraniyah in south-eastern Baghdad. He set off the bomb when Iraqi soldiers tried to stop him from approaching the building.

That attack killed 12 people, including three Iraqi soldiers, and injured 23.

In the other attack, a suicide bomber detonated his explosive belt as worshippers were leaving the Rasoul mosque in the capital’s eastern New Baghdad district. Five people died and nine were injured.
