Martin begins three-day visit to Middle East

Foreign Affairs Minister Micheál Martin is due to hold talks with Israeli and Palestinian officials during a three-day visit to the Middle East this week.Foreign Affairs Minister Micheál Martin is due to hold talks with Israeli and Palestinian officials during a three-day visit to the Middle East this week.

Mr Martin will be meeting his Egyptian counterpart in Cairo today, as well as Egyptian mediators overseeing talks between the Israelis and Palestinians.

He also plans to hold talks with Amr Moussa, the Secretary General of the Arab League, to discuss plans to build on an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Other issues up for discussion include economic relations between Ireland and Egypt and developments in Lebanon, Darfur and Chad.

Mr Martin will visit the West Bank tomorrow before heading on to Jerusalem on Friday, where he will lay a wreath on a Holocaust memorial site.
