Mugabe to be inaugurated
29/06/2008 - 11:39:41

Robert Mugabe is to be inaugurated as president of Zimbabwe today.

Government officials told reporters to be at the presidency for the 3pm (2pm Irish time) ceremony, with the word going out even before results from Friday’s presidential run off had been announced.

African and other world leaders had condemned Friday’s vote, in which Mugabe was the only candidate.

It followed a campaign in which, according to human rights groups, opposition supporters were the targets of a state-sponsored campaign of violence.

The opposition candidate, Morgan Tsvangirai, pulled out of the run off because of the violence.
