Zimbabwe opposition leader brought to court
14/06/2008 - 14:00:15

A judge in Zimbabwe forced the police to produce to court a leading opposition politician who had been arrested.

Reporters watched as Tendai Biti, number two in the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), handcuffed and appearing tense, was brought into Justice Ben Hlatshwayo’s court in Harare today.

Earlier, according to an opposition lawyer, police had told the judge they were not sure his order issued a day earlier was genuine. Judge Hlatshwayo then gave police an hour to produce Mr Biti.

Mr Biti, secretary general of the MDC, was arrested upon returning to Zimbabwe from neighbouring South Africa on Thursday.

Police had refused to say where he was being held. Police say he faces a treason charge, which can carry the death penalty.

MDC president Morgan Tsvangirai faces long-time leader Robert Mugabe in a June 27 presidential run-off.
