01/07/2008 - 08:41:15

The Netherlands’ Foreign Ministry said Zimbabwe’s opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has left the Dutch Embassy in Harare, Zimbabwe. The Netherlands’ Foreign Ministry said Zimbabwe’s opposition leader has left the Dutch Embassy in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Ministry spokesman Rob Dekker says Morgan Tsvangirai left the embassy after deciding the situation in Zimbabwe is now calm enough for him to return to his home for the time being.

He said embassy staff in Harare will remain in close contact with Mr Tsvangirai after his departure on Monday.

Mr Dekker said today that Mr Tsvangirai sought refuge because he felt unsafe and would be welcome again if the same situation arose.

Mr Tsvangirai won the opening round of Zimbabwe’s elections, but withdrew from the run-off June 22 because of violence against his supporters, leaving Robert Mugabe to claim victory.
