Militants killed in hunt for escaped inmates
15/06/2008 - 12:07:36

More than 15 insurgents were killed by Afghan army and coalition forces in the southern province of Kandahar during a search for escaped prisoners.

The US said it has not been confirmed that any of the dead were escaped prisoners. Five militants have also been taken into custody after yesterday's operation.

Afghan officials say 870 prisoners escaped from the Kandahar prison during a co-ordinated assault on the facility by dozens of Taliban militants late Friday.
