European golfers will no longer have to fly to the Far East or Aruba to try to qualify for November’s World Cup in China.
The Sierra club in Poland is now to stage a qualifier on September 25 – 28, with three qualifying spots being up for grabs.
Keith Waters, European Tour Director of International Policy, said: “By adding a third qualifier in Europe players have greater flexibility to select a World Cup qualifying event that suits their travel schedule.
“It is also in keeping with the spirit of the World Cup to bring the qualifying event to an emerging golf market like Poland. This is the first event that The European Tour has staged there and bringing a truly international event such as this can only serve to further accelerate the growth of this magnificent game.” The world rankings will again determine the 18 exempt nations for China, but.
Open champion Padraig Harrington turned down the event last year and it was left to Irish pair Michael Hoey and Gareth Maybin to go to Aruba to qualify. They made it by finishing second to Puerto Rico.
