Harvet continues recovery with stunning 65 17/05/2008 - 12:48:39
After opening with a 77 and then surviving the halfway cut with nothing to spare, Frenchman Gregory Havret produced a blistering 65 when the Irish Open resumed at Adare Manor near Limerick today.
With his compatriot Michael Lorenz-Vera the man out in front at six under par overnight, the man who beat Phil Mickelson in a play-off to win the Scottish Open last July burst through the field to four under and joint third place as the leaders prepared to tee off again.
Yet it could have been even better. Havret missed out on birdies at three of the four par-fives, three-putting the 551-yard 12th and failing from inside five feet on the 548-yard last.
"It was nearly a huge score," said the 31-year-old, trying to become the third French winner of the European Tour season after Thomas Levet and Gregory Bourdy.
"The course was a bit softer after the rain last night, but four under is a good score after three rounds."
Dubliner Paul McGinley had called the lay-out "a monster" on Thursday and Darren Clarke described the set-up as "ridiculously difficult".
The Ulsterman did not expect to see changes made by European Tour officials, but the par-four third was cut by 40 yards and the short 11th by 55 for the third round.
Rookie Lorenzo-Vera, already with a runners-up finish in China this season, led by one from German World Cup winner Marcel Siem, with Australian Richard Green and Spaniard Pablo Larrazabal in joint third.
Clarke and McGinley stood three under and two under respectively when they set out again.
