Ethics watchdog postpones inquiry into Ahern's finances
3/29/2008 - 8:45:29 AMThe Oireachtas ethics watchdog has reportedly decided to put its inquiry into the Taoiseach's personal finances on hold.
The Standards in Public Office Commission began the investigation following a complaint from Fine Gael that Bertie Ahern may not have been tax compliant when he filed a tax clearance certificate after the 2002 general election.
However, reports this morning say it has decided not to proceed with the probe until the Revenue Commissioners have completed an investigation of Mr Ahern's tax affairs.
Revenue is unlikely to conclude its investigation until after the Mahon Tribunal has finished its inquiry into the Taoiseach's finances, which is expected to happen at the end of this year.
