Two separate investigations were launched tonight into the death of an off-duty garda officer in a road accident.

The 36-year-old died when his motorcycle and a car were in collision on the main N7 road, about one mile outside Roscrea in Co Tipperary.

The crash happened on the Limerick side of the town at around 3.50pm.

A woman driver and sole occupant of the car was injured and taken to Nenagh Hospital.

“Her injuries are not believed to be life threatening,” a garda spokesman said.

Gardaí are investigating while the Garda Ombudsman Commission has started its own inquiries, as is usual when an officer is involved in a fatal road crash.

The dead man was an off-duty Garda officer attached to Donnybrook Garda Station in Dublin.

His body was removed to Nenagh Hospital for a post-mortem examination to be carried out tomorrow.

In an earlier incident, another motorcyclist was killed in a crash in Galway.

The 40-year-old man’s bike and a car were in collision at Curraghline, Headford Road, at around 3pm, according to investigating officers.

The dead man was taken to University City Hospital Galway for a post-mortem examination tomorrow.

The sole occupant of the car, a woman, was injured and taken to University City Hospital Galway with minor injuries.
