Lenihan visits Limerick amid calls for gang crackdown

Minister for Justice Brian Lenihan is due to visit Limerick today amid renewed calls for further measures to crackdown on gangland crime.

The pre-arranged trip comes less than two days after five houses were hit with machine-gun fire during a drive-by shooting in the city on Tuesday night.

The incident in St Mary's Park is believed to be linked to the long-running feud between rival Limerick drugs gangs.

Several measures, including the deployment of armed gardaĆ, have already been introduced in an effort to reduce the level of gang violence in the city.

However, they appear to be having little effect on the ground.
