FF TD calls for Ireland to boycott Olympic ceremony
3/27/2008 - 8:55:13 AMDublin South East Fianna Fáil TD Chris Andrews has today called on the Olympic Council of Ireland to withdraw from the opening ceremony at this year’s Olympic Games in protest at Chinese policies towards Tibet.
"It is with regret and great reluctance that one contemplates recommending any political action in the sports arena. Ideally sports - all sports - should be apolitical," he said.
"However, there comes a time when nations use sports to market themselves and at the same time flagrantly abuse human rights.
"China is clearly hell bent on using the Olympic Games to project a positive image of itself to the world, particularly economically. There is nothing wrong with that, China has much to be proud of in this regard.
"However, when it attempts to quell the human rights of other nations, such as Tibet, in such a serious and violent manner as it is currently doing, then it is time to cry halt.
"Ireland has always stood up for and upheld the human rights agenda internationally. I believe that we must do so now at this crucial juncture.
"Withdrawing from the opening ceremony would have the effect of making a strong and important statement without sacrificing the years of very hard work put in by our athletes."
