Ahern slams tribunal’s treatment of former secretary 03/04/2008 - 13:52:32
The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has launched a stinging attack on the Mahon Tribunal during an interview with reporters in Dublin today.
Speaking at University College Dublin, Mr Ahern said the tribunal's treatment of his former secretary Grainne Carruth was appalling.
Ms Carruth was forced to admit recently that she lodged sterling on behalf of Mr Ahern to accounts in the Irish Permanent.
She had previously denied doing so, while the Taoiseach himself told the tribunal the lodgements were the proceeds of his pay cheques.
Mr Ahern said today that Ms Carruth's treatment was "appalling", "totally unnecessary" and "low-life stuff".
"There was no need to harangue her, she just didn't remember something," he said. "She was concealing nothing."
