Secretary admits lodging Sterling for Taoiseach
20/03/2008 - 12:13:15

The Taoiseach's former constituency secretary has admitted that money she paid into his building society account on his behalf was the proceeds of Sterling exchanges.

GrĂ¡inne Carruth has admitted that previous evidence she gave to the Mahon Tribunal was wrong and that cash she lodged to the Irish Permanent in Drumcondra was converted from British pounds.

Yesterday, Ms Carruth denied all recollection of handling Sterling cash transactions on behalf of Bertie Ahern in the 1990s.

Her denial flew in the face of evidence from a former Irish Permanent branch manager who said it appeared several lodgements to Mr Ahern's account and those of his daughters originated from the exchange of Sterling immediately beforehand.

Judge Alan Mahon told Ms Carruth to reflect on her evidence overnight and she returned today to admit that some of the lodgements she made had been converted from Sterling.

This evidence contradicts previous testimony from Mr Ahern, who has told the tribunal that the lodgements came from his pay cheques.
