Lenihan to meet new EU finance counterparts
13/05/2008 - 07:32:46

New Finance Minister Brian Lenihan will today attend his first EU meeting in Brussels.

The Dublin West TD, who was appointed to the key ministry last Wednesday, will meet with his counterparts from the other 26 members states.

Ecofin ministers meet every month to discuss EU economic and budgetary policy as well as developments in the financial markets.

Mr Lenihan faces challenging times in the Department of Finance as economic growth slows due to falling tax revenue and a decline in the construction and manufacturing industries.

More than 11,000 people have lost their jobs since the start of 2008, a 27% increase on the same time last year.

Almost 200,000 workers or 5.5% of the workforce were unemployed at the end of April.
