Major: Lisbon Treaty can't proceed without Irish

Former British prime minister John Major says he cannot see a way around the impasse thatFormer British prime minister John Major says he cannot see a way around the impasse that's come about as a result of Ireland's rejection of the Lisbon treaty.

He made the remarks at a ceremony where he and former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds were awarded the freedom of Cork city for their work on the peace process.

Mr Major said the Irish rejection was carried by a fairly comprehensive majority and cannot be written off.

He said he cannot see how the other EU nations could legally proceed with the Lisbon Treaty without Ireland's support.
