Cowen arrives in Brussels for EU talks on Lisbon 19/06/2008 - 12:11:16
The Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, has arrived in Brussels for an EU summit that will be dominated by Ireland's rejection of the Lisbon Treaty.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the talks, Mr Cowen said a period of reflection was needed to consider how the EU should respond to the Irish vote.
He said it was currently too early say what would happen, but Ireland was keen to continue playing a role in the European Union.
Meanwhile, Environment Minister John Gormley said this morning that the situation was "extremely complex" and the Government needed to discern the message being communicated by the voters.
The European Commission has already effectively told the Government that the onus is on Ireland to come forward with proposals on how the EU should respond to the Lisbon vote.
