'Those Mean Streets' a powerful coming-of-age tale
29/08/2008 - 13:42:33

'Those Mean Streets'

Director: Jonathan Levine
Cast: Ben Kingsley, Olivia Thirlby, Josh Peck, Framke Janssen

This is a terrific coming-of-age story, with both the main characters – a troubled teenager and a slightly wacky psychologist – facing up to who they are.

And in both roles – Peck as the lost youth and Kingsley as the equally lost adult – we have actors in quite excellent form, Peck especially so since it is upon his shoulders that the film is carried to triumph.

The place is hip-hop New York, the time the l990s, and Luke, peddling drugs, does a deal with analyst Dr Squires, who promises to get him off what troubles him. The plot takes them on a journey through the city towards redemption.

The pair spark off one another to some effect in a film written and directed by Levine who brings us one of the year’s most original films.

Star Rating: 5/5
