Lots of laughs in 'Step Brothers' 29/08/2008 - 13:50:40
Step Brothers (Sony)
Director: Adam McKay
Cast: Will Ferrell, Mary Steenburgen, John C. Reilly, Richard Jenkins
Cert: 16
Ferrell, who co-wrote the screenplay for 'Step Brothers', has had an indifferent screen career, even though his reputation remains high in Hollywood. He’s an actor who always seems to deliver the goods without actually doing so.
This comedy, however, might change the above opinion since it’s slick, funny, tellingly observant and played at exactly the right pitch.
Ferrell and Reilly are excellent as the grown-up sons of recently-married single parents Steenburgen and Jenkins … well, they’re not quite grown up.
As newly-bonded step brothers they have to share a bedroom and learn to live with one another … not easy when they’re both spoiled and selfish.
And they are both magnificently spoiled and selfish in that snappy one-liner way that both delights us and makes us cringe.
What makes the film different is that it doesn’t fall into the obvious trap of resorting to off-colour humour; it keeps moving along as a serious – semi-serious – look at how the step brothers come to terms with their new lifestyle.
It’s a lot of fun all round.
Star Rating: 4/5
