Lack of originality hits 'Babylon AD'
29/08/2008 - 13:46:26

'Babylon AD' (Fox)

Director: Mathieu Kassovitz
Cast: Vin Diesel, Mark Strong, Melanie Thierry, Michelle Yeoh, Gerard Depardieu
Cert: 12

There are moments, albeit too few, where this futuristic adventure yarn threatens to lift off: the storyline has much going for it, there is an excellent cast, some of the action is good … but somehow the film fails to click.

Diesel, playing a mercenary, is hired by baddie Depardieu to escort Thierry to Russia, but unknown to our hunky hero the lady is carrying an organism that a cult wants to get its hands on in order to create a Messiah.

There are many slips, mishaps and dangers lurking along the way but the problem is they don’t excite or frighten us as they should, nor does the weak dialogue, indifferent directing and so-so acting.

It’s all rather old-fashioned and decidedly lacking in originality.

Star Rating: 2/3
