Lumet sets the screen alight with gripping drama
09/05/2008 - 19:51:23

Director Sidney Lumet delivers a real cracker in ‘Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead’ (EIV, €24.99).

The Hansons are an outwardly happy family — Charles (Albert Finney) and Nanette Hanson (Rosemary Harris) run a jewellery store, while sons Andy (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and Hank (Ethan Hawke) appear equally successful.

But Andy’s hiding a drug-filled fraudulent lifestyle, while Hank has also run into money and drink problems.

To solve their financial woes, they hire an accomplice to rob their parents’ store, but both the robber and their mom are killed.

What follows is a gripping series of shock revelations as Charles resolves to find out why his wife died.
