07/09/2008 - 15:11:36

Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheal Martin has said that there have been “no conclusions” in terms of Ireland opting out of any common defence policy contained in the Lisbon Treaty.Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheal Martin has said that there have been “no conclusions” in terms of Ireland opting out of any common defence policy contained in the Lisbon Treaty.

Speaking today on RTE Radio, Minister Martin said: “It’s a bit early yet to surface a possible proposal, like opting out of a common defence policy.”

Minister Martin said: “Isolation is no longer the route forward... My own view would be that we would have the optimal degree of engagement in the European Union within the parameters that we have set and consistent with Irish foreigh policy.”

“Conscription is not going to happen because of Lisbon. But this shows that people have concerns about the defence and military issue. So how do we deal with that question?... This is what is coming up along with other issues.”
