Nerves a factor, admits Cuddihy
The increased support from home shores is also leading to a new wave of pressure on competitors used to plying their trade in far flung destinations with few fans to cheer them on.
“I haven’t been this nervous for years,” Kilkenny’s Joanne Cuddihy admitted after finishing fourth in the opening heat of the 400m (52.09), qualifying for tonight’s semi-final as the quickest of the three fastest losers.
“I really thought I had to go out that strong to be up there. The decision to go out strong was made before but the atmosphere ‘helped or hindered’ that decision.”
Kevin Ankrom, high-performance director of Athletics Ireland, is fearful the heaving mass of humanity packed inside this 80,000 capacity stadium could overawe some Irish competitors.
“I’m worried about the others as well because you’ve got a packed house,” he said. “None of these kids have seen this. None. And even though the Irish will take good support, this is my fourth Olympics and I’m nervous just standing here.”
