Enda Kenny is failing in role as Taoiseach

On the subject of Mr Kenny’s competence to lead the country in Europe (Letter, Jun 8), I suggest that former Fine Gael leaders who failed to assign Enda to ministerial roles were entirely justified.

The main reason that Mr Kenny is now the Taoiseach is that he capitalised at a time that it was not yet known that the euro system depends on a flawed system of reporting (International Financial Reporting Standards).

The IFRS allows bankers to hide losses and award themselves bonuses, which they did, and the figures upon which the bank guarantee decision was made were based on these figures which hid Anglo and other losses from the regulator and the Government.

This is the subject of ongoing discussions in Europe and may not suit Enda if it is allowed reach the media and if the significance of this is made known by the media. Enda’s strategy in Europe has been to align with Germany, which is bizarre as economically we are faced with different circumstances entirely to Germany. Enda has failed to make any case for Ireland and has instead bought into Germany’s own misconception of the Irish people and the Irish economy.

Furthermore, in spite of the long-term stated objective of a single labour market in the EU, and a monitoring of labour force mobility through the statistical tools of the eurobarometer, Enda has allowed the minister for education to reverse the foreign language initiative in primary schools rather than seeking additional EU funding for this project.

There is no coherent policy for Europe or for the labour market. This Government is one of optics and is entirely PR-driven. We need to elect people who are capable of delivering.

Last night I attended the launch of the FF Futures Group in Dublin and it stuck out a mile who the real Taoiseach is. We need to get a Cork man back in the driving seat, it seems.

Would that we could elect Micheál Martin to the job. He would do us all proud.
