Forget The X Factor and The Voice.
Forget dropping out of school to form a band. A third-level college in Cork is set to produce a new breed of highly-qualified pop stars.
Cork Institute of Technology’s Cork School of Music announced yesterday that it is to offer Ireland’s first degree in pop music later this year.
"The degree will provide all the skills and training necessary to successfully participate professionally in Ireland’s vibrant pop and rock music industry," a spokesperson said.
The four-year, level-eight degree course will start in September with provision for 20 musicians.
They will embark on a full-time course of study in popular music, studying performance skills, ensemble, harmony and theory, song writing, music technology, and music business and entrepreneurship, alongside students on CSM’s established music degree course and its new BA in theatre and drama studies.
They will have access
to CSM’s world-class facilities including the 380-seat Curtis Auditorium, three music technology labs and a recording studio.
The course will include:
* Instrumental tuition for voice, keyboard, electric guitar, electric bass, and drums;.
* Ensemble tuition, including everything from rock, pop, hip-hop, blues, soul, metal, jazz, salsa, disco, electronica, funk, ska, and reggae;
* Musicianship and harmony;
* Songwriting, musical direction, and arrangement;
* Music technology, including live sound and PA, studio engineering, and computer-based music applications.
The course application and entry process for the first year is strictly through the CIT Cork School of Music, but it will be on the CAO system later.
Aspiring musicians will have to undergo an assessment, including preparing two contrasting pieces of music, as well as a written exam.
Applications must be received before Friday, June 8.
CIT Cork School of Music is also home to 2,500 part-time music students, of all ages, in over 100 disciplines.
