Lameness threat in wet weather
One issue which will need attention particularly in suckler herds is lameness.
Soft ground will result in hoofs growing longer as they are not being naturally worn down.
Lameness in cows will make heat detection more difficult. Cows that are lame will also not stand for a bull easily, resulting in poorer herd fertility. Lameness in cows will reduce mobility, causing cows to eat less which will reduce energy intake also affecting fertility.
Lower energy intakes of feed will also reduce milk quality reducing calf performance.
