Martyn considers Leeds future
And that means the veteran England goalkeeper will turn his back on a £500,000 move to Chelsea.
Martyn says that if he is re-instated as number one keeper ahead of Paul Robinson he will stay at Elland Road for the rest of his career.
Martyn’s agent Phil Graham insisted: “If Nigel is number one goalkeeper he will stay at Leeds for the rest of his career, he really wants to play first-team football and that’s why he’s working so hard at the moment to make sure he does,” he said.
Martyn is being considered by manager Peter Reid as Leeds’ first choice again.
The former England man has held talks with Reid, who says: “I’ve had a word with Nigel, who is more than happy to stay here. He’s going nowhere, take it from me.”
Graham said Chelsea’s interest came as a surprise and confirmed Martyn wants to see what his Elland Road future is before thinking of any move.
Graham said: “Nigel is very happy where he is but he does want to play first-team football.
“It’s very, very important to him for his long-term security regarding his contract and financial security and for his family.
“Regarding Chelsea, whether he would be number one there is in doubt so he may find himself in the same position he is in at Leeds, but as things stand he wants to be Leeds number one next season.”
The prospect of being used as short-term cover at Chelsea has seemingly ruled out any move to Stamford Bridge.
Martyn was aware that he would be used only as back-up for first choice Carlo Cudicini while new signing Jurgen Macho recovers from a serious knee injury.
