Surely Mayo deserves a lane on each side?
We believe that the programme announced for 2003 will only serve to widen the gap between the western and eastern parts of the country.
Expectations were high in Ballina following the national spatial strategy announcement designating Ballina and Castlebar as growth centres. Now, yet again, the west has been let down.
Last year two large industries in Co Mayo said they had incurred costs of over 500,000 because of goods being damaged in transit on the N5. The IDA have repeatedly said that, even in times of economic boom, they find it difficult to attract industry to Co Mayo because of poor roads. Tourism is also being affected as visitors choose destinations that are quicker and safer to access.
In relation to the N5 and N26, it is not a motorway or a dual carriageway that is being sought, simply a two-lane carriageway. Surely, the businesses and citizens of Mayo deserve at least that.
