Gardaí quiz two about car in fatal crash

GARDAÍ in Nenagh have spoken to two women, a mother and daughter, who were involved in the sale of the Opel Corsa car in which three teenagers died on New Year’s Eve.

The car was sold a few days prior to the accident for a sum understood to be less than €200.

The accident claimed the lives of Stuart Donnellan, 14, Padraig Bourke, 16 and Adrian O’Brien, 17.

Kelsey McTiernan, 15, and Thomas Clarke, 16, are being treated for majorinjuries at the Mid Western Regional Hospital.

A garda spokesman said statements from the previous owner of the 1995 Opel Corsa will form part of the file being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Gardaí have not yet been able to speak to the two survivors at the hospital due to their medical condition.

Gardaí are confident they will be able to determine who was driving the car when it left the Nenagh-Dolla Road at around 7.30pm on December 31.

A number of young people were involved in the purchase of the car and had gone to the home of the previous owner.

Gardaí are trying to establish who was the registered owner at the time of the sale. It is an offence under the Road Traffic Act to sell a car to a person under 17.
